An inter-vertebral disc is the cartilaginous material between adjacent spinal vertebrae (spinal bones) and acts as a shock absorbing cushion to facilitate proper biomechanical joint function and reduce friction. The disc also acts as a spacer between adjacent vertebrae to allow the spinal nerve roots to exit the spine and supply vital nerve energy to all aspects of the body. A disc can herniate (bulge or rupture) due to injury, repetitive stress, posture and weight gain, aging, and/or a vertebral subluxation. A vertebral subluxation is the partial dislocation of one vertebrae in relation to another causing altered biomechanical joint function which can then cause altered stress to the disc and thus disc degeneration, disc bulge, herniation, or rupture.
